Hotels in Mestre and other mainland locations can generally be approached by road. Accommodation within historic Venice may require the road journey to finish at Piazzale Roma, followed by a pedestrian or water connection.
We therefore avoid describing every Venice Airport transfer as “door-to-door by car”. The realistic endpoint depends on the location and road accessibility of the accommodation.

Historic Venice
For a conventional road transfer, Piazzale Roma is the key arrival point before passengers continue towards accommodation by foot or water as required.
Mestre
Mestre is on the mainland. Hotels, railway connections, private addresses and business destinations here can be approached directly by road where access permits.
Lagoon Islands

Venice Airport also lists private motorboat operators providing direct water transfers.

This is why “Venice Airport transfer” does not necessarily mean a journey to Venice. For some passengers, VCE is simply the most useful airport for reaching another part of north-eastern Italy.
VCE Has a Mountain Role Too
Venice is famous for its lagoon, but the airport also serves travellers continuing north towards the Dolomites.
The airport currently lists direct coach connections to Cortina d'Ampezzo, while seasonal shuttle services also connect with mountain areas including Val di Fassa and Val di Fiemme.
For a private mountain transfer, the exact accommodation address and travel date matter because distance, weather and winter road conditions can significantly affect the journey.
Summer Has a Different Geography
During the warmer months, Marco Polo Airport also handles substantial leisure traffic towards Adriatic coastal destinations.
Travellers heading to beach accommodation around Jesolo, Cavallino and other coastal resorts may have no reason to enter Venice itself.

Venice Airport Is Expanding
Marco Polo is undergoing a substantial long-term development programme. The airport's Masterplan 2037 includes terminal expansion and a future direct connection to Italy's national railway network.
The new Terminal 2A development adds approximately 14,300 square metres and 10 new gates. The airport's development programme is designed for more than 15 million passengers by 2030 and more than 20 million by 2037.
This is particularly relevant when reading older Venice transport guides: airport infrastructure and access are actively evolving.

It provides useful current context for an airport that is simultaneously handling substantial traffic and undergoing major infrastructure development.
No Railway Station at the Terminal — Yet
Despite serving Venice, Marco Polo Airport does not currently have its own operational national railway station.
Passengers travelling by train can connect through Venezia Mestre or Venezia Santa Lucia. ACTV and ATVO buses connect the airport with both railway gateways.
The planned airport rail link will eventually change this arrangement, but travellers should use the current bus, road or water connections until the new railway infrastructure enters service.
Important: Vehicle Waiting at the Terminal Is Controlled
Venice Airport operates a Controlled Traffic Zone (ZTC) around the terminal.
Current airport rules permit ordinary vehicles to remain within the ZTC for up to 10 minutes, plus a two-minute grace period, subject to the airport's rules and exceptions.
This is one reason passengers should follow the pickup instructions associated with their transfer rather than assuming that a vehicle can simply remain immediately outside Arrivals indefinitely.
The Terminal Is Not Open All Night
Venice Airport currently states that the terminal is closed between midnight and 04:00, in accordance with the applicable ENAC ordinance.
During that period, remaining inside is restricted to passengers with appropriate travel documentation for the following day or specific authorisation.
Travellers with very early departures should therefore check current airport access arrangements rather than assuming the terminal remains continuously open overnight.
